INS Vikrant first indigenous aircraft carrier is ready to set afloat, Know its Features and more

  • Launching its first indigenous aircraft INS Vikrant tomorrow, India will enter into a select group of countries having the capability of constructing and designing a carrier of this size and capability.

    The carrier weighing 37,500 tonne will be launched at Kochi shipyard and this is the end of first phase of its building and it will be re-docked for outfitting and construction of superstructure.

    The countries which are capable of building such an equivalent size ship are the US, the UK, France and Russia.

    According to the schedule, the carrier will go for extensive trails in 2016 before being inducted into the Indian Navy by the end of 2018.

    The 262 metres (860 ft) and breadth of 60 metres long carrier can make fly the MiG29K, Light Combat Aircraft and Kamov 31. It has a capacity of up to thirty aircraft.

    The percentage of indigenous components in the warship would be approximately between 80 and 90% in floating department, up to 60 percent and 30 percent in movement and fighting components of the carriers respectively.
