The outdated Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 has been proposed to amend recently due to the latest forms of representation of women in the newer forms of communication like internet, multimedia messaging etc.,
The Key amendments proposed in the act are:
- The scope of the law has been widened to cover audio-visual media and material in electronic form.
- Penalties are enhanced up to a maximum of 3 years imprisonment and Rd. 50,000 to 1,00,000 for the first conviction and imprisonment not less than 2 years and may extend up to 7 years and a fine between Rs.1,00,000 to Rs.5,00,000 for second conviction.
- Police Inspector rank authorities can carry out search and seizure, in addition to the central and state government authorized officers.
