  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) inducted its latest acquisition from the United States of America, the C130J Super Hercules tactical airlift transport aircraft at the Hindan airbase. The aircraft, the first of the six that India ordered from the U.S. Government, will be based at the newly raised 77 squadron named ‘Veiled Vipers’, with the motto “Kill with Stealth”, signifying the capability of the aircraft to undertake deployment of special forces in all-weather conditions.

    What is C130J aircraft?
The Lockheed Martin C-130J "Super" Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. The C-130J is a comprehensive update of the venerable Lockheed C-130 Hercules, with new engines, flight deck, and other systems. The Hercules family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. During more than 50 years of service, the family has participated in military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations. The Hercules has outlived several planned successor designs, most notably the Advanced Medium STOL Transport contestants. Fifteen nations have placed orders for a total of 300 C-130Js, of which 206 aircraft have been delivered by December 2010.

Capabilities and Uses of C130J aircraft:
    1. Because it is equipped with night vision imaging, it is capable of airdropping personnel and material even in complete darkness.
    2. It is capable to land on unprepared or semi-prepared landing strips and has self-protection to operate in hostile environments.
    3. It can undertake low-level air-to-air refuelling that enhances the aircrafts range and rapid forward basing of personnel and equipment in emergent situations.
    4. During wartime, the aircraft can be employed for special air operations, airborne operations, air transported operations, air supply and maintenance operations.
    5. In peacetime, its performs operations and maintenance in mountainous terrain in adverse circumstances and humanitarian assistance.
