Jagdish Sharan Verma (80), popularly known as J.S. Verma, is the 27th Cheif Justice of India died here on 22nd April 2013 at 9:30pm. Mr. Verma has been suffering from multiple organ failure and admitted to the hospital before he died.
Mr. Verma was recently headed the Committee to constitute Anti-Rape Law Bill and most of his recommendations were taken into consideration. He is a very experienced Judge and has had a wonderful career all through his life.
Mr. Verma born on January 18, 1933, had his early education in Satna, Madhya Pradesh.

- Verma began his legal career in 1955 and became a Judge of Madhya Pradesh high court in June-1973.
- He became Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh high court in June,1986
- Served as Chief Justice of Rajasthan high court from September, 1986 to mid-1989
- In June, 1989, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court
- Became Chief Justice of India in March 25, 1997 and retired on 18 January 1998.
- Justice J. S. Verma was a former chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC),
- He was also the first chairperson of News Broadcasting Standards Authority.
