Changes to Food Security Bill was approved by Finance Ministry

  • After taking in the views of the Department of Women and Child Development and those posted on the Food Ministry's website the proposed changes to the draft Food Security Bill had been approved by Finance ministry. The Bill is ready to be introduced in Parliament in the winter session and if passed it will be implemented from the next fiscal year.

    The following are some important Changes proposed to the Bill:
    • A minimum of 3 Kg grains per month shall be provided to each house-hold in general category and if food stocks allowed higher allocations could also be made for these beneficiaries.
    • Another notable change is the bill includes a clause for prohibiting unwarranted diversion of land and water from food production.
    • Provision of free meal to eligible pregnant women, lactating mothers, needy children, destitutes and migrants through anganwadis at an additional cost of Rs.12,000 Crore.
    • Nutritional support for children in age group of 6 months to 6 years and for children between 6 and 14 years.

    Other proposals include streamlining of the public distribution system, better storage facilities, plugging of leakages, more investment in agriculture and productivity to meet the obligations under the proposed Bill. The beneficiaries will be identified on the basis of the ongoing Socio-Economic Caste Census.
