PRAKRITI - A National Level Festival of Tribal Dances

  • The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil inaugurated "Prakriti", National Festival of Tribal Dances. The festival has been organized by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture from 16th to 18th March, 2011 at Siri Fort Auditorium.

    PRAKRITI – the integrated event, is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Tribal Co-operative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED) and the Ministry of Culture to present tribal art and culture in a holistic manner. The Ministry of Culture brings in performing tribal troupes from different parts of the country to make the event a unique blend of tribal art and culture.

    The Minister of Tribal Affairs, Shri Bhuria, welcomed the guests and also enlightened them with the initiatives that are being undertaken for the conservation and development of Scheduled Tribes and their culture. She, the Minister for Tribal Affairs, further informed that for strengthening education among Scheduled Tribe Students, a scheme of ‘Pre-Matric’ scholarship is being started. Under the scheme, a budget of Rs. 50 crore has been allocated for the year 2011-12.

    Ms. Selja, the Minister for Culture, apprised that the Ministry has constituted a Committee to supervise the work of seven State cultural centres that came into being with the initiation of former Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi for the conservation and development of various folk arts.

    Tribal Dances being presented in Prakriti give glimpses of various art forms. These include some of the well-known tribal dances like Karma Dance, Uttar Pradesh; Bhagoriya, Navai, Korku and Gudum,Madhya Pradesh; Harul and Chholiya,Uttrakhand; Theyyam,Kerala; Lompi, Manipur; Vasava Holi, Rathwa ni Gair and Siddhi Dhamal, , Gujarat; Dhol and Chakri Gowri, Maharashtra; Gair Ghoura, Rajasthan; Lambadis and Gussadi, Andhra Pradesh; Gorwara dance of Karnataka; Parichakali, Lakshadweep; Kaksar, Chhttisgarh; Khariya, Jharkhand; Bardoi Sikhla, Assam; Santhali, West Bengal; Tamang Selo, Sikkim; Saura, Orissa; War, Manipur;. Jabro, Ladakh;. Cheraw, Mizoram; Aphilo Kiwo,Nagaland;.Wangala, Meghalaya and Hai-Hak, Tripura.
