  • Japan with about 6,852 islands extending along the Pacific coast of Asia will often experiences the Earthquakes, this is because of the geographical location of the Japanese Islands.

The islands of Japan is located in a Volcanic Region on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is the result of large oceanic movements occurring over hundreds of millions of years from the mid-Silurian to the Pleistocene which is a result of the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the continental Amurian Plate and Okinawa Plate to the south, and subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Okhotsk Plate to the north.

The Location of Japan is typically in a region where several continental plates meet which is the major and main reason for the frequent earthquakes.

Originally Japan was attached to the eastern coast of the Eurasian continent. The subducting plates pulled Japan eastward, opening the Sea of Japan about 15 million years ago. Japan has a total of 108 active volcanoes. The Destructive earthquakes, often leading to tsunamis, occur several times each century. Previously the 1923 Tokyo earthquake killed over 140,000 people. The most recent major quakes are the 2004 Chūetsu earthquake and the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. An 8.9 magnitude earthquake devastated Japan on March 11, 2011 triggered a tsunami. Immediately tsunami alert is given from Hawaii to Australia.
