Highlight of the issue - LCA Technologies:
The story of Tejas, the Indian Light Combat Aircraft(LCA), is the story of development and maturity of aircraft technologies in India. The historic first flight of th Technology Demonstrator-1(TC-1) took place on 4th January 2001, four decades after only other indigenous fighter HF-24( Marut) flew at the very same venue HAL airport in Bangalore. In this historical context, the Tejas programme had the twin objectives of design and development of a state-of-art combat aircraft for Indian Air force and alongside, bridge the technology gap of 4 decades in the process.
Accordingly, Tejas design and development adopted a phased approach, the first one being Technology Demonstration(TD) phase. The crucial fourth generation technologies identified for demonstration in this phase were quadruplex digital fly-by-wire flight control system, all glass cockpit, composite structure and microprocessor-based monitoring and controlled mechanical systems. Tejas prototype was quite unique considering the large number of new technologies packed in one prototype.
