    The Railway Budget for the fiscal year 2012 has be introduced by the Railway Minister Mamata  Benarjee noting that the Indian Railways are going through a critical phase. Saying so she requested the various protesters nationwide not to go for Rail Rokos. She declared the Railway budget as a common man's budget.

    Mamata expressed her concerns about the problems with 6th Pay Commission that an additional expenditure of 76,000 Crores are due with 6th Pay Commission.

    These following are the Highlights of the budget speech by Mamata in the parliament:
    • Annual Investments of Railways are at 57,630 Crores
    • The earning let to exceed Rs.1 Lakh Crores mark
    • Paid full dividend for 2009-10
    • No Hike over the existing Ticket Fares
    • 442 New stations are to be built by the end of march 2012
    • 236 more stations to be upgraded as Adarsh Stations
    • Online/Internet Ticket Booking charges are reduced by 50% for both sleeper and AC classes
    • New Rail capacity to be Increased to 700km
    • Trolleys will be introduced for the convenience of Passengers
    • 10,000 Railway Shelters for poor i.e., track side dwellers in Mumbai, Sealdah, Siliguri, Tiruchirapalli on pilot basis.
    • Multi-purpose 'GO INDIA' Smart Cards, for long journey, to be introduced in a pilot project
    • Rs.10,000 Crores are to be raised through Bonds
    • All India Security Helpline for the sake of Passengers
    • Safety Guaranteed Schemes for Railway Employees
    • 13,000 Backlog Posts are to be filled by notification
    • Senior Citizen concessions are reduced by 10%
    • Senior Male Citizens are now eligible for concession up to 40%
    • The Age limit for Senior Female citizens is reduced from  62 to 58 Years
    • 50% concession for media persons and family twice a year
    • New schemes for elderly Railway Employees
    • Scholarship schemes for Low Income Passengers
    • 16,000 Ex-Servicemen will be Inducted into Railways by the year end
    • Setting up of Sports Category for eligible sports persons.
    • A Better accessesability in trains is ensured for physically Handicapped persons
    • Physically handicapped persons will now be able to get the concession facility in Rajdhani and Shatabadi Trains also
    • An International centre is to be setup at Agra
    • Gas based power plant in Maharashtra
    • Anti-Collision device to be mounted in 3 more divisions
    • Metro Coach Factory to be setup at Singur
    • Rail Industrial Park at Nandigram
    • New Coach Factory in Palakhad of Kerala
    • 1320MW Thermal Plant to be setup in Agra
    • Diesel Locomotive Factory in Manipur
    • A Centre of Excellence in Software at Darjeeling proposed under the aegis of CRIS.
    • Suburban Rail Network to be setup in Mumbai & other cities
    • 9 Suburban trains for Chennai
    • First coach from Rae Bareli to be rollout in 3 months
    • New rail between Imphal and Manipur
    • More than 200 new routes are announced
    • A New Train called Vivekananda Express will be started
    • New Duranto Trains are to be Introduced
    • Three new Shatabdi Trains will be on tracks soon
    • Double Decker Services for Mumbai-Ahmadabad
    • More Railway connectivity announced for Telangana Region
    • Two special Trains will be given to the states for not having collision record
    • Kolkata is the only Metro under the Railways, Kolkata Metro Railway will expand its network.
    • New MMTS between Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
    • A Bridge Factory in J & K and a state-of-art Institute for Tunnel and Bridge Engineering is proposed at Jammu.
    • Rail Industrial Parks at Jellingham and New Bongaigaon proposed.
    • GPS Based ‘Fog Safe’ Device to be deployed.
    • All state capitals in the North-East except Sikkim to be connected by Rail in next seven years.
    • New Super AC Class to be introduced.

    Although Mamata didi reduced femake senior citizen eligibilty it has not taken place till date ( 8.5.2011.Don't know why and when the notification will come.
