Parliament approved voting rights for Non-Resident Indians in elections with the passing of the Representation of the People(Amendment) Act, 2010 in the monsoon session.
The current Bill aims at providing rights to Indians who had gone abroad for employment or education, but had not obtained citizenship of the country where they are residing now, to get registered in the electrol rolls and vote in electrons to legislatures and Parliament.
NRIs would be allowed to register as voters int he constituency from where they obtained their passports.
25 nations globally accorded such a right to their citizens living away from home country.
Internet voting was one option the government would consider in the future once technical expertise and infrastructure were in place in the country.
The bill says that the central government, after consulting the Election Commission of India, will specify the time within which non-resident Indians shall be registered in the electoral rolls and the procedure to do so.
The bill fulfills a long standing demand of NRIs and an assurance by the government to provide voting rights to Indian citizens living abroad.
